Incorporating Yoga into your Physical Therapy Routine may be beneficial.

The physical practice of Yoga uses physical postures to improve overall health. Yoga promotes increased range of motion and flexibility, decreased pain, improved posture, balance, strength and stability. All these qualities we also strive for in a Physical Therapy routine.  Yoga can also add additional positive components to Physical Therapy. It can add autonomic nervous system relaxation, increased sleep quality and psychological healing just to name a few.

-Before starting any other exercise program be sure to speak with your Physical Therapist to make sure that they are aware of your interest in Yoga and do not start it until they approve it.

 

-Find a Yoga teacher or online Yoga class that you enjoy and start with a beginner class. Also starting with certain Yoga postures and poses can be beneficial, instead of a Yoga class. This will assure you that you are ready or not.

 

-It is very important to make sure that the Yoga class aligns with your Physical Therapy routine and goals. This way the focus on the two is the same and you are not doing anything that could damage your Physical Therapy progress.

 

-Know your limits and listen to your body. Never do anything that does not feel right. Be sure to use modifications and proper props to reduce the chance of injuring yourself.

 

Researchers have seen the positive benefits of Yoga supporting many different types of Physical Therapy routines and clients. In addition to a professionally planned Physical Therapy routine by a Physical Therapist, Yoga may support it by helping improve posture and balance, increasing functional range of motion, flexibility, strength and stability.
